Policies

Appalachian State University firmly believes that students, staff, and faculty members have the right to live, work, and learn in environments free from harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. The university has a number of policies specifically relating to harassment and discrimination, as well as numerous policies and guidelines to assure that all members of the campus community coexist respectfully.

Historically, sexual harassment and racial harassment have received the bulk of the attention in the courts, in boardrooms, and at institutions of higher learning. Due to heightened awareness and an increase in the number of other types of harassment and discrimination that were occurring nationally, and mirrored on university campuses, in 2000 the university adopted the Policy Prohibiting Workplace Harassment. This policy broadened the scope of our sexual harassment policy and better reflected the needs of our university community members by establishing a policy and a prevention plan that states everyone shall have equal access and an opportunity to live, learn, and work in respectful environments regardless of their race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.
