Veteran Status

Harassment based upon veteran status is a form of discrimination in violation of federal and/or state law and Appalachian State University Policy . This form of discrimination may be inadvertent or intentional, and it can be obvious or subtle; regardless, it is unacceptable at Appalachian and, in many cases, is against the law.

Definition of Veteran:

The North Carolina Office of State Personnel defines veteran as, "a person who served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty, for reasons other than training, and has been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions."

Examples of veteran status discrimination may include:

An employer pays an employee receiving veteran benefits less than similarly situated employees not receiving veteran benefits.

  • A qualified candidate is not offered a job because of his/her veteran status; or in some cases lack thereof.
  • An employer permits employees to put down, demean, and ridicule an employee because of his/her military background.

It is also unlawful to retaliate against an individual for opposing employment practices that discriminate based on veteran status or for filing a discrimination charge, testifying, or participating in any way in an investigation, proceeding, or litigation under Title VII.
