Political Affiliation
In the State of North Carolina, political affiliation may not be considered in the recruitment and selection of new employees of the state; selection of employees for promotion, training, career development, transfer, demotion for fiscal purposes, and/or reduction in force; administration of disciplinary policies or termination for cause; and establishment of rates of pay.

The North Carolina Office of State Personnel defines “political affiliation” as the following:
Political affiliation is the membership in, participation in, or support of, a particular political party, group, or candidate.
Political influence occurs when political affiliation impacts the decision to hire or not to hire and the selection decision was not based on fair and valid selection criteria.
It is the policy of Appalachian to prohibit discrimination based on political affiliation with respect to applicants for enrollment and current students.
