What targets can do to stop workplace harassment

  • Tell offender that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop.
  • “Miss Manner” approach: When someone says something that is offensive, reply, “Excuse me?”
  • Inform the offender that you do not discuss personal issues at work.
  • Place a copy of ASU’s Policy Prohibiting Unlawful Harassment on their desk.
  • Send the harasser a letter.
    • provide factual account of what happened
    • describe how the incident(s) made you feel
    • explain what you want to happen next
    • deliver the letter in person or mail it
    • keep a copy
  • 4 Step Model: Interrupting Offensive Statements
    • repeat the offensive statement
    • share your feelings
    • make a clear request for the behavior to change
    • depending on relationship – inform offender of consequences of continuing offensive behavior
  • Report offending behavior to your supervisor
  • Report offending behavior to the Equity Office
