Rights & Responsibilities

All members of the university community, as well as guests and vendors, have a role to play in creating and maintaining respectful environments at ASU. Everyone has rights and responsibilities and is held accountable for knowing and complying with the harassment policies and complaint procedures, as well as following them.

Staff members (SPA employees)

Staff members have the right to work in environments free from harassment and discrimination. A staff member has the right to be treated fairly, impartially, and with respect when he/she has harassment concerns and complaints. All employees have the right to receive a prompt response to a complaint and to be extended the greatest degree of confidentiality possible if he/she lodges a complaint or if he/she is the person against whom an allegation is lodged. Furthermore, staff members have the right not to be subjected to retaliation if they have filed a complaint about or otherwise oppose workplace harassment, or if they provide information relative to a complaint, or who are involved in the complaint in any way.

Staff members, as well as their supervisors, are responsible for creating and maintaining supportive and harassment-free work environments for all members of the university community - while on campus as well as during off-campus supported events. Staff members are responsible for adhering to the University's Policy Prohibiting Workplace Harassment . In addition, staff members are responsible for reporting workplace harassment in accordance with the complaint procedures outlined within that policy and plan in order to obtain assistance in resolving concerns.

Unit Heads

Unit heads and other supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining supportive and harassment-free work environments for all members of the university community. They have the responsibility for responding promptly and adequately to complaints of workplace harassment, and for seeking assistance from the University's Equity Office in resolving those complaints.

The University

The Equity Office has the responsibility to inform members of the university community about University harassment policies, to implement and evaluate the harassment prevention plan (including training, education, and outreach), to treat persons who have concerns and complaints about harassment with respect by responding promptly and to the extent that confidentiality will allow, and to work with the appropriate persons involved to rectify harassment and discrimination, when it has been proven to have occurred. Likewise, the University has the responsibility to prohibit retaliation against individuals who file a complaint about or otherwise oppose workplace harassment, or who provide information relative to a complaint, or who are involved in the complaint in any way.
